Decompressing

I'm at my "Safe Space" - my daughter's house. She lives only a few blocks from where she grew up. She's lived here 14 years and does not expect to leave anytime soon. The house was a little crowded when the 3 kids were home, but now they are down to one adult, who is finishing school, and working on building a business for her commissioned art. She already has clients, and is working to get the word out about her services. (Post in the comments if you want to get in touch with her about book covers or other projects). It's quiet here. At my own house, my husband watches TV (well, so does my son-in-law in the next room), but at a volume so high I cannot even think coherently. I'm between hospital visits with my brother, meetings with his independent living facility, and waiting to hear about a hospital discharge, which may happen today. So, I don't want to go home just now. I'm catching up on essentials and will likely try to catch a nap after I...

The Book is Unbearable to Read!

It's poignant, prescient, and too real for so many in our society. Which book? The Children of Men. It was written in 2010. I don't remember reading it, although I remember reading some discussions of it. I was busy in those days - teaching high school, and surrounded by evidence of fertility, both the relatively young parents of the students, and their children. My daughter had three children at that time. I'd been a relatively young grandparent, compared to my peers.  Most of my friends and relatives had grown children, but few were having children before their late twenties or early thirties. My daughter was the exception. At only 21, she married a man with a not quite 9 years old son. I was so excited to become a grandparent for the first time. He actually wasn't adopted formerly until his 23rd birthday, but for me, from the day of the wedding, he was mine. She went on to add two more children to the mix. I felt the same way about my husband's son, born before w...

Some Random Thoughts About Planning for Societies

Many people in this world would prefer America to have a more structured, top-down, managed economy, culture, and governmental system. It's similar to many stories/series in science fiction. And, in most, the 'Smart' people are the ones in charge. My family and friends are all smart, in different ways. Most are at least in the 'college material' smart category. Some are in the "Hoo-boy! This guy intimidates me with what he/she knows in a particular field". A few are almost savants. And quite a few are smart about people, their jobs/craft, and managing their personal income. It is the not-top-tier smart guys, or even those the next tier down, who generally have better people skills - at least sufficient to realize they don't have a clue how to talk to people not in their socio-economic strata. The Elite levels in any society have NO CLUE that the "proles" consider them idiots, and are able to run their own lives without interference or assista...

A Worthy Cause

Back to Blogger for Now

I've been working on getting the Substack site to work with my most used technology - iPad and Amazon Fire tablet.  Except for the laptop, it's been a bust. The desktop version is crippled, text entry is clunky and hard to access, and cut and paste options are "not ready for prime time". IPad had a minimal version as an app. Fire app version doesn't exist. And the text entry for cell is not possible with my vision. So, I'm back to Blogger. Say what you will about Google products, this does work. Substack never paid off in views or subscriptions. This site is not monetized, and I won't look for ads in the future. I may put a voluntary donation app on site - the Buy me a Coffee app seems to works for others. That's all for now. My brother is being admitted to the hospital for low blood sugar and possibly other things. Even though he's the younger brother, his body is aging fast.  Take care and don't forget to visit my buddy, Francis Poretto's...
