How Long, O Lord, How Long?

There's a great roundtable discussion of Israel at FrontPage Magazine.,  Caroline Glick discusses the difficulty of accepting the "two-state solution".

...the implication of saying that you accept as legitimate, as a negotiating partner, a terrorist organization whose sole purpose in existing is your own annihilation makes it very difficult for you to make your case in international forums.  Because if the PLO is legitimate, then how is Israel legitimate?

And you know, one of the things that the Tea Party movement thankfully in this country has been railing against is this whole multiculturalism, post-nationalism ideology that essentially means that nations like the American people and like the Jewish people have no reason to exist and have no inherent rationale for fighting to defend their way of life.  Because if there is no relative benefit to being an American or being a Jew, then you have no right to stand up and oppose the people who are telling you that your way of life is inherently evil.

And so, you know, we have these elements inside of Israel that have been pushing forward this agenda, which is multiculturalism, which is post-nationalist; without any recognition that these — as Jews, the first nation to come into existence by self-consciously defining ourselves at Mount Sinai, when we accepted the Ten Commandments from Moses and God — that when we say, Okay, there’s nothing in particular special about Jewish nationalism and Jewish homeland, this is an inherently anti-Jewish position.  Post-nationalism at its core, that rejects the notion of nation states and nations, is anti-Semitic.

And we haven’t internalized this ideology that makes it impossible for us to have a coherent discussion about who we are, what we want, why it is that the things that we are and the things that we want are worth fighting and living for, and dying for.  And it’s been extraordinarily debilitating.

That's really where I disagree with the multicultural philosophy - it presumes that all cultures are special and equally valid - which I don't believe that they are.

Both America and Israel are special - we are just about the only  countries that you can voluntarily join.  The conditions for membership are, in the case of Israel, that you be historically Jewish.  Any color is acceptable, as long as you share the religion.

Now, they also give FULL citizenship to the Arabs that have inhabited Israel in the past - which the "Palestinians" did NOT.  Those non-Israelis self-identified as Jordanian, or Syrian, or some other Arabic country prior to Israel's founding.  Only after Arafat and others decided to make an issue of the "plight" of those landless people did they begin calling themselves "Palestinians".

I'm pro-Israel.  I think it's rank anti-Semitism to twist oneself into knots to find some way to ignore their perfectly valid claim to the land.

The "two-state solution" is a disguised Final Solution.  If Israel is not the only valid state, it will be destroyed, along with as many Jews as their enemies can manage.  While Israel has always given full rights to its Muslim, Christian, and other minorities, it is the ONLY country in the Mideast to do so.  In every other Mideast country, you not only have no rights if not Muslim, it better be the "right" kind of Muslim (Sunni, Shi'ite, or other).  Only one kind allowed in any country.

QUESTION: What are issues and recommendations for solutions that are unique to Muslim Americans?

1. A Law against harrassment of a Muslim women wearing Hijab at the Airport, DMV and other public arenas.

2. Institute a Law to allow Muslim Employees to take a hours off from work for Friday Jummah Prayer.

3. Make the 2 Eid's, recognized National Holidays on Calendars with days off from work.

4. Optional Halal meals in federal buildiings, public schools and colleges.

5. Provide prayer areas suitable for Salah and Jummah, in public and private facilities. (i.e. Malls, Airports, Universities and government buildings.)

6. Organize a Muslim American group to assist in recommendations for US foreign policy affecting majority Muslim countries.

First, there is no harassment of Muslim women wearing hajibs in airports. There may be a requirement that they reveal their face (to a woman), as it is not only POSSIBLE that they could be someone other than the reputed passenger, it HAS HAPPENED that an impersonater took the place of a veiled woman (in several cases, cowardly terrorists - yes, I realize that's a redundant phrase - have put on the hijab to escape lawful authorities).

I don't have the right to take off for religious observances, unless it's mentioned in the employee handbook or union contract. Generally, it's not been a major problem, if the observance is once or twice a year. But, this site is demanding the release EVERY WEEK.

I don't believe that these Muslims have noticed, CHRISTMAS isn't a national holiday. In deference to the MANY employees who would like the time off, most employers close down for Christmas Day. SOME also close down over Easter (schools, for example). It isn't required, but an accomodation to a cultural norm.

I don't have access to private prayer rooms in most public buildings - why should they have what I don't?

Nobody has organized a Catholic group to "assist in recommendations for US foreign policy affecting majority Catholic countries" - so what makes them so special?

Answer - nothing.

To Fast - Or Not?

I'd naively assumed that Muslims would follow the same guidelines as Catholics - women who are pregnant or nursing are exempt from fasting, automatically. I never thought about the issue. However, this article seems to be suggesting that women are not following that advice.

Fasting, for Catholics, means 2 smaller meals and 1 normal-sized meal. It's only for 1 day a week, and then only during Lent.

Ramadan, on the other hand, is a month-long fast. Muslims are not to eat during the day, at all. That's a lot of deprivation for pregnant or nursing moms.

Well, since it's optional for moms, why make a fuss? Because of this:

More to the Gym Story

You know, when the story first broke about the Muslim who was rudely interrupted at prayer, then told by the gym's staff

The manager told me, 'You have to respect her (the patron), but she does not have to respect your God,' " said Wardeh Sultan of Dearborn.

- something about it just didn't ring true to me. I was sure that the staff would have bent over backwards to treat Ms. Sultan with respect, particularly in Detroit, where so many Muslims live. I didn't understand why the staff member would have said "you have to respect her" - the other member.

Now I understand. In Front Page Magazine's story by Janet Levy: (Oy! Her supposed religious/ethnic background will allow the story to be ignored)

According to Jodi Berry, executive director of Fitness USA, Wardeh Sultan was praying in front of another member’s locker when the member wanted access to her belongings inside the locker. The inconvenienced patron tried to interrupt Ms. Sultan, but she remained prostrate in front of the locker and an altercation ensued. A manager was called into the locker room to intervene.

OK.

Now it makes sense. The director wasn't making a gratuitous snide comment, but simply stating reasonable expectations about Ms. Sultan's need to respect her fellow gym users' need to have access to their lockers - even if it interrupted her prayers. In other words, she needed to act as though the world didn't have to stop 5 times a day to accommodate her.

This is an example of an unreasonable accommodation. Western society isn't set up for separate prayer rooms in businesses. Nor should businesses and government offices and buildings have to provide them. They never provided a place for me to quietly say the rosary.

Ms. Sultan and her fellow Muslims need to understand. We don't stop for them to say their prayers. We never did. We don't HAVE to now. If a business or person wants to wait, that's fine. But, unlike the countries that have imposed mandatory observance, we don't have to.

Don't like it?

Move to a Muslim country.

Think I'm being unfair? Or rude? Let me explain what happens in those countries.

Residents of a southern Somalia town who do not pray five times a day will be beheaded, an official said Wednesday, adding the edict will be implemented in three days.

Shops, tea houses and other public places in Bulo Burto, about 124 miles northeast of the capital, Mogadishu, should be closed during prayer time and no one should be on the streets, said Sheik Hussein Barre Rage, the chairman of the town's Islamic court. His court is part of a network backed by armed militiamen that has taken control of much of southern Somalia in recent months, bringing a strict interpretation of Islam that is alien to many Somalis.

Those who do not follow the prayer edict after three days have elapsed, "will definitely be beheaded according to Islamic law," Rage told The Associated Press by phone. "As Muslims we should practice Islam fully, not in part, and that is what our religion enjoins us to do."

Granted, this is extreme, but most Muslim countries have rules about not working during prayer time - even for non-Muslims. It's not optional.

It's the law.

Pope - A Dope? Nope!

I hadn't commented yet on Pope B16's comments about Islam. Since I've sort of gotten out of the habit of watching the "news", I often miss the latest liberal outrage over B16's radical insistence on speaking the truth to his flock.

I found a post on The Cafeteria is Closed that covers the subject rather well. The blogger, Gerald Augustinus (what a great name!), states the obvious about the coverage the comments have received, with a simple title:

B16 didn't just fall off the turnip truck. He says and writes exactly what he means.

In the most provocative part of a speech this week on “faith and reason,” the pontiff recounted a conversation between an “erudite” Byzantine Christian emperor and a “learned” Muslim Persian circa 1391. The pope quoted the emperor saying, “Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.”

I agree - it IS evil and inhuman to put a sword or gun to the head of a person, and make them swear to follow Islam. And to have ALL Islam consider that person a legitimate convert, whose repudiation of Islam would justify a death sentence.

I've heard rumors that the visit to Turkey is off, but:

Turkey's foreign minister said Sunday that the pope was still expected to visit in November in what would be his first trip to a Muslim nation.

"From our point of view, there is no change," Abdullah Gul told reporters before departing for a trip to the United States.

I hope he's still going - I realize that security is paramount, but Turkey's Catholics are under seige. Priests have died, and everyone is stepping lightly, hoping to ride out the anti-Catholic sentiment. The flock NEED a pastoral visit.
