This COULD be a lengthy post. But, I'll try to winnow it down to a reasonable length.

  1. The CA Parent Bribery 'Scandal' - the 1st parent is sentenced - Felicity Huffman. Some people are FauxTraged that she "only" got 14 days incarceration. Keep in mind that the money was - for a Beverly Hills type - small ($15K). The sentence is being used to fuel more "Blacks are sentenced more harshly for less" memes. The truth is more nuanced, and undercuts the 'racism' shouts.
  2. Meanwhile, an older article I'd bookmarked for a possible post was just found (while clearing out old bookmarks), and it seems particularly relevant now.
  3. It's an old post on Reason, but still valid - what students don't understand about how our economy work.
  4. Too many people have little sense of proportion, leading to over-reporting of minor things to police. A kid is reported as a threat for posing with a Nerf gun.
  5. Immigrants should NOT get a "Three Strikes (or more)" until they are deported. The FIRST crime should have them getting the Boot. There is NO evidence that a misogynistic asshole will renounce a lifetime of demeaning and abusing women, if he is an immigrant.
  6. A pregnant woman is being coerced to sign a non-disclosure agreement, or forfeit her healthcare rights. Where are the women's organizations on this?
  7. Time to saddle up, and bring in the culprits.
  8. Internet De-Platforming - the solution is to enforce Section 230. Content Providers are either:
    1. Viewpoint neutral, in which case they are immune from any lawsuit for the content, or,
    2. Viewpoint controlling, in which case they may be sued for content. No other option.

..Bad, bad, back!  I'm out today from work (hate to do that, but I really am in bad shape).  Can't get into the doctor's until Monday, so, need to call off for that day, too.  AND make up some lessons that the kids can do without me.  It's more work than going to work, so, usually, I just suck it up. Not today, though.  I'm a big baby about severe pain. Since I didn't take work home with me, and I really don't like TV, I'll plan on catching up with my web reading and blogging. Winter Break? Bah, Humbug!

I work in a public school.  As a result, I've occasionally been corrected - very gently, I must say - when I refer to the 2 week vacation at the end of the year as "Christmas Break". Oh, no, I am informed, it's a GENERIC holiday celebration (I generally refrain from pointing out that HOLIDAY is a variant of the original HOLY DAY).  Just happens that SO many important holidays occur around this time that it's convenient to adjourn for vacation. I always respond by saying, "I'll call it Winter Break the very first year that it DOESN'T include Christmas". Christmas is the ONLY reason for the break - it comes at a bad time, just before the end of the semester.  It would make FAR more sense to delay the vacation for another week, give the tests, then adjourn for a between-semesters vacation. Won't happen.  Parents (most of them taxpayers and/or voters) would have the school boards roasted - like chestnuts - for daring to implement the sensible swi...

Repose does not come naturally to active youngsters. It must be developed, little by little, until the person has learned to appreciate and be comfortable in silent tranquility.
